The rule that matters

Use measured travel height, not brochure height. Local signs and official rules override this guide. Dates, tariffs and local access rules can change.

Likely Class 2

ASFA defines Class 2 as 2–3 m overall height with GVW at or below 3.5 t. Tolls remain route-specific.

Emission zones
Action if entering a low-emission zone: check the local rules and obtain a Crit’Air certificate if needed. Foreign-registered vehicles can use the official Crit’Air process.
Winter equipment
1 November–31 March: mountain-zone rules can require winter tyres or removable anti-slip devices. The exact communes are locally designated and signed.
Safety kit
Required: carry a high-visibility vest and warning triangle. Keep the vest reachable from inside the vehicle.

Likely Class B. Confirm.

For two-axle vehicles, Italian motorway classification uses front-axle height and axle count, not total travel height. A van is commonly Class B, but confirm the classification for your vehicle and route.

Action. Confirm the class with the motorway before budgeting a route.

Emission zones
Action in towns: Italy uses locally controlled ZTLs. Look for signed access controls and check the relevant comune before driving into a historic centre; there is no single national sticker in this guide.
Winter equipment
Winter-tyre or chain rules are set by road-owner ordinances and signs. Many routes use 15 November–15 April as a reference window, but the route-specific order controls.
Safety kit
General trip kit: carry a warning triangle and high-visibility vest, then confirm any route- or vehicle-specific equipment requirement before travel.

Annual motorway vignette

Vehicles at or below 3.5 t use the CHF 40 motorway vignette. It is an annual product, not a trip-length product.

Action. Buy only through the official Via portal or an authorised seller.

Emission zones
No nationwide environmental sticker action is included here. City access and local restrictions can change, so check the destination municipality before entering urban areas.
Winter equipment
There is no nationwide date-based winter-tyre mandate. The Federal Roads Office strongly recommends winter-capable tyres and says roadworthiness and conditions still matter.
Safety kit
General trip kit: carry a warning triangle and high-visibility vest, then confirm current equipment requirements for your vehicle and route.

Vignette. Up to 3.5 t.

A vignette is required on relevant motorways and expressways. For a 1–10 day trip, the 2026 10-day digital car vignette is €12.80.

Action. The 10-day product can start immediately; check section-toll routes separately.

Emission zones
No nationwide passenger-van sticker action is included here. Check city and destination restrictions separately before entering urban areas.
Winter equipment
1 November–15 April: vehicles up to 3.5 t need winter tyres on all wheels when road conditions are wintry. Chains can be the alternative in the circumstances set by the official rules.
Safety kit
General trip kit: carry a warning triangle, high-visibility vest and first-aid kit. Confirm the current legal list for your vehicle before departure.

Toll / vignette

No nationwide light-van vignette

No fixed national passenger-van motorway charge is included here. Confirm any route, tunnel or local charge separately.

Emission zones
Action if entering an Umweltzone: obtain the correct environmental badge first. The badge is tied to the registration number and local exemptions can apply.
Winter equipment
Winter tyres are required when conditions are icy, snowy, slushy or frosty. This is conditions-based rather than a calendar window.
Safety kit
General trip kit: carry a warning triangle, high-visibility vest and first-aid kit. Confirm the current legal list for your vehicle before departure.

Before you leave

The short list.

  • Measure the van in its actual travel state: racks, bikes, boxes and aerials included.
  • Match GVW to the plated figure and check the relevant toll route before committing to it.
  • Check every planned city for signed low-emission, ZTL and access restrictions.
  • For winter routes, read the road signs and carry the equipment that applies to the road on the day.
  • Keep safety kit accessible, not buried under bikes or trip gear.
  • Recheck the official source immediately before travel. This is planning help, not legal advice.
